{"id":653,"date":"2012-03-15T06:00:02","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T14:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=653"},"modified":"2012-03-15T06:00:02","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T14:00:02","slug":"delicious-easy-not-from-a-box-brownies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=653","title":{"rendered":"Delicious, Easy Not-From-A-Box Brownies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I used to always make brownies from a box. \u00a0Why not? \u00a0Easy, cheap, fast. \u00a0So I don&#8217;t entirely remember why one day I made brownies from scratch, using the recipe from Marc Bittman&#8217;s (excellent) cookbook\u00a0<em>How to Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food. \u00a0<\/em>However, make them I did and discovered that not only was the recipe delicious, but it&#8217;s not actually that hard and it doesn&#8217;t take that much more time. \u00a0And, although it&#8217;s hard to beat the cost of a $5 box of brownies, if you&#8217;re anything like me, you already have these ingredients lying around the house. \u00a0Give it a try and see if you can go back to boxed brownies!<\/p>\n<p>\n    <div class=\"hrecipe\">\n       <span class=\"item\">\n          <p id=\"recipeseo-title\" class=\"fn\">Delicious, Easy Not-From-A-Box Brownies<\/p>\n       <\/span><p id=\"recipeseo-rating\" class=\"review hreview-aggregate\">\n          <span class=\"rating\"><\/span>\n       <\/p><p id=\"recipeseo-prep-time\">Prep Time: <span class=\"preptime\">15 minutes<span class=\"value-title\" title=\"PT15M\"><!-- --><\/span><\/span><\/p><p id=\"recipeseo-cook-time\">Cook Time: <span class=\"cooktime\">20 minutes<span class=\"value-title\" title=\"PT20M\"><!-- --><\/span><\/span><\/p><p id=\"recipeseo-total-time\">Total Time: <span class=\"duration\">35 minutes<span class=\"value-title\" title=\"PT35M\"><!-- --><\/span><\/span><\/p><p id=\"recipeseo-yield\">Yield: <span class=\"yield\">1 Dozen<\/span><\/p><p id=\"recipeseo-ingredients\">Ingredients<\/p><ul id=\"recipeseo-ingredients-list\"><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-0\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-0-amount\" class=\"amount\">2 oz <\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-0-name\" class=\"name\">Unsweetened chocolate, roughly chopped<\/span><\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-1\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-1-amount\" class=\"amount\">1 stick<\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-1-name\" class=\"name\">Unsalted butter (I go ahead and use salted), softened, plus a little for the greasing pan<\/span><\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-2\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-2-amount\" class=\"amount\">1 cup<\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-2-name\" class=\"name\">Sugar<\/span><\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-3\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-3-amount\" class=\"amount\">2<\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-3-name\" class=\"name\">Eggs<\/span><\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-4\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-4-amount\" class=\"amount\">1\/2 cup <\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-4-name\" class=\"name\">All-purpose flour<\/span><\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-5\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-5-amount\" class=\"amount\">Pinch<\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-5-name\" class=\"name\">Salt<\/span><\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-6\" class=\"ingredient\"><span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-6-amount\" class=\"amount\">1\/2 tsp <\/span> <span id=\"recipeseo-ingredient-6-name\" class=\"name\">Vanilla extract<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p id=\"recipeseo-instructions\">Cooking Directions<\/p><ol id=\"recipeseo-instructions-list\" class=\"instructions\"><li id=\"recipeseo-instruction-0\" class=\"instruction\">Preheat the oven to 350F.  Grease an 8-inch square baking pan, or line it with aluminum foil and grease the foil. (I grease the pan and do not bother with foil.)\r<\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-instruction-1\" class=\"instruction\">Combine the chocolate and butter in a small saucepan over very low heat, stirring occasionally.  When the chocolate is just about melted, remove from the heat and continue to stir until the mixture is smooth.\r<\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-instruction-2\" class=\"instruction\">Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the sugar.  Then beat in the eggs, one at a time.  Gently stir in the flour, salt, and vanilla.  Pour and scrape into the prepared pan and bake 20-25 minutes, or until just barely set in the middle.  It\\'s better to underbake brownies than to overbake them.  Cool on a rack before cutting.  Store, covered and at room temperature, for no more than a day.\r<\/li><li id=\"recipeseo-instruction-3\" class=\"instruction\">***In the book, there\\'s an excursus on ways to alter the recipe, which I haven\\'t used, but think that they could be great additions.
