{"id":646,"date":"2012-02-28T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2012-02-28T14:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=646"},"modified":"2012-02-28T06:00:18","modified_gmt":"2012-02-28T14:00:18","slug":"greene-ink-press-website-updated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=646","title":{"rendered":"Greene Ink Press Website Updated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I posted about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=418\">designing the Greene Ink Press website<\/a> for my sister-in-law, Kendra, who has graduated from the University of Iowa&#8217;s Center for the Book and is now pursuing a career in writing and letterpress.\u00a0 When I first put her site all together, I built it using older standards.\u00a0 Late last year I took a class in designing with CSS, Cascading Style Sheets.\u00a0 I had already dabbled in CSS here and there, but the class helped me to have a more comprehensive understanding of how to build a site using CSS completely.<\/p>\n<p>After the class, I was very enthused with all I learned and decided to put my learning to practice and completely re-haul Kendra&#8217;s website.\u00a0 Mostly it looks the same, the benefits being more in the structure of how the site is built.\u00a0 However, we added <a href=\"http:\/\/greeneinkpress.com\/broadsides\/one_perfect_white_swan.html\">new<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/greeneinkpress.com\/collaborations\/yes_but.html\">sections<\/a> to her site to show off her magnificent work and I updated the <a href=\"http:\/\/greeneinkpress.com\/essays\/beautiful_and_clever.html\">Essays<\/a> section to look much more graceful and less heavy\/clunky&#8230;a major improvement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=648\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-648\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-648\" title=\"Greene Ink Press - Old Essays Page Design\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kendra_old_essays-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kendra_old_essays-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kendra_old_essays-768x572.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kendra_old_essays.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Here is a before picture of the essays page.\u00a0 Notice how domineering the header of the essay is and how everything feels very tight and heavy.\u00a0 I wanted it to look better than that, but at the time I had no better solution and that was about the best I could do.<\/p>\n<p>After my class, however, I learned how to structure things in a better way, and how with the new technology you can do different things.\u00a0 So, I jumped right in and created a lighter page.\u00a0 Instead of a heavy header for the essay information, I lightened it up with rules that I couldn&#8217;t do as accurately or as well using the old technology.\u00a0 I also limited the width of the essay text so that the reader&#8217;s eye doesn&#8217;t have to cross the length of the entire page, making it easier to read, and gave a little more space on the page as a whole.\u00a0 Overall, I think this redesign greatly improves the design of her site:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=647\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-647\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-647\" title=\"Greene Ink Press - New Essay Page Design\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kendra_new_essays-1024x659.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a>This website is the beginning of doing an overhaul on all of the <a href=\"http:\/\/jsgreene.com\/design\/websites\/index.html\">websites that I&#8217;ve designed<\/a> and still manage.\u00a0 It&#8217;s exciting to me to be able to use the new technology to update and create new and improved designs for my clients!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I posted about designing the Greene Ink Press website for my sister-in-law, Kendra, who has graduated from the University of Iowa&#8217;s Center for the Book and is now pursuing a career in writing and letterpress.\u00a0 When I first &hellip;
