{"id":514,"date":"2011-10-11T07:00:19","date_gmt":"2011-10-11T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=514"},"modified":"2011-10-11T07:00:19","modified_gmt":"2011-10-11T15:00:19","slug":"a-very-delayed-wedding-gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=514","title":{"rendered":"A very delayed wedding gift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two good friends of mine, Terrence &amp; Liz, got married two years ago, a destination wedding held in Italy on the island of Capri. \u00a0Although I really wanted to travel to their wedding (and see Italy, much less Capri!), I just couldn&#8217;t do it at the time. \u00a0Shortly after they got back, I told them that I wanted to paint them a series of fruits and veggies for their wedding present, since they already had been living together and didn&#8217;t seem to need a new pot or pan.<\/p>\n<p>Their choices in fruits and vegetables were really colorful and difficult: red cabbage, pomegranate, butternut squash and kiwi fruit. \u00a0It took me awhile to finish all of the paintings, even though they were small, in part because I started with the kiwi, which just did not go well in the first draft. \u00a0At all. \u00a0But, fortunately, I pressed on and was able to finish the first (successful painting), of a red cabbage:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=519\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-519\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-519\" title=\"Red Cabbage Watercolor Painting, Framed\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/cabbage-1024x838.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/cabbage-1024x838.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/cabbage-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/cabbage-768x629.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/cabbage.jpg 1162w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I cannot tell you how much I love the drama and motion of the red cabbage. \u00a0I am very, very proud of that painting. \u00a0After the cabbage, I painted a butternut squash. \u00a0I found a picture of one cut open, which I thought was much more interesting than the outside of one, which is really quite dull:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=518\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-518\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-518\" title=\"Butternut Squash Watercolor Painting, Framed\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/butternutsquash-1024x882.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"551\" \/><\/a>I like how this one came out, contrasting the smoothness of the inside of the vegetable with the very textured seeds\/guts. \u00a0After painting the squash, I then turned to their third fruit, a pomegranate. \u00a0I have <a href=\"http:\/\/jsgreene.com\/watercolors\/fruit_vegetables\/index.html\">previously painted a pomegranate<\/a>\u00a0as a gift for my mother-in-law that I really like, so I was a little nervous that this one would come out as good:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=521\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-521\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-521\" title=\"Pomegranate Watercolor Painting, Framed\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pomegranate-1024x823.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pomegranate-1024x823.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pomegranate-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pomegranate-768x617.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pomegranate.jpg 1214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>I am happy with how it came out, although I wish I would have left a little more white in the seeds to make them a bit more luminescent.
