{"id":268,"date":"2011-04-19T08:47:36","date_gmt":"2011-04-19T16:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=268"},"modified":"2011-04-19T08:47:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-19T16:47:36","slug":"a-passover-treat-toffee-chocolate-matzah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=268","title":{"rendered":"A Passover Treat: Toffee-Chocolate Matzah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of years ago when I was working in the spiritual care department at the hospital, there were a few boxes of matzah crackers leftover and the rabbi was offering them to any takers. \u00a0I jumped at the opportunity because I like the taste of matzahs &#8212; but what to do with a whole box? \u00a0I found <a title=\"Homemade Toffee-Chocolate Matzah\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marthastewart.com\/recipe\/homemade-toffee-chocolate-matzah?xsc=eml_tvm_2009_04_10\">this recipe<\/a> online, and have made it several times since. \u00a0It is delicious, and one of Gavin&#8217;s favorites!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Homemade Toffee-Chocolate Matzah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prep time:<\/strong> 5-10 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Cook time:<\/strong> 30 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Makes:<\/strong> 4 sheets<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">4 sheets unsalted, non-egg matzah crackers<br \/>\n1\/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces<br \/>\n1 cup packed dark-brown sugar<br \/>\n1 (12-ounce) package semisweet chocolate chips (2 cups)<br \/>\nCoarse sea salt (<em>absolutely NOT iodized table salt&#8230;I use Diamond Kosher Salt, which I love!)<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><\/em>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">2. Line a baking sheet <em>(usually I use two baking sheets because the matzah doesn&#8217;t quite fit on one) <\/em>with parchment paper <em>(or Silpat)<\/em>. \u00a0Place matzah in an even layer on baking sheet and set aside.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">3. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. \u00a0Add brown sugar and immediately reduce temperature to low. \u00a0Cook, stirring, adjusting heat as necessary, until sugar has completely dissolved and begins to bubble. \u00a0Drizzle toffee over matzah and spread to cover using a spatula. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">4. Transfer toffee-covered matzah to oven and bake until toffee has a rich, shiny sheen, 10-20 minutes. \u00a0Remove from oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips. \u00a0Tent matzah with aluminum foil and let stand 20-30 minutes.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">5. Remove foil tent and spread melted chocolate over matzah to cover; sprinkle with sea salt. \u00a0Transfer matzah to refrigerator and let chill at least 2 hours <em>(this is usually an agonizing time for Gavin).<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6.
