{"id":196,"date":"2011-02-24T08:32:51","date_gmt":"2011-02-24T16:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=196"},"modified":"2011-02-24T08:32:51","modified_gmt":"2011-02-24T16:32:51","slug":"glass-workshop-2-window-vases-and-potential-earrings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=196","title":{"rendered":"Glass Workshop 2: Window Vases and Potential Earrings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Knowing that I was going to work or be away the last three Thursdays of February, I decided to go to the glass workshop the week after I made the <a title=\"Orange and Blue Window Vases\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?p=127\">orange and blue window vases<\/a>. \u00a0(Aunt Trisha, by the way, loved them! \u00a0What a fun gift!) \u00a0Since I enjoy making them so much, I decided to do some more window vases and have them partially-fused. \u00a0And, boy, am I glad I did &#8212; I think this batch turned out really nicely.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to use this particular session to work on overlapping colors\/shapes, to see how the glass interacts with each other. \u00a0I bought some more glass, including some small pieces of iridescent glass (which is very expensive &#8212; $9 for a piece of glass about the size of a concert ticket). \u00a0I love how these pieces turned out:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-213\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=213\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-213\" title=\"Primary Colors Window Vase\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0966-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0966-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0966.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>For my first piece, I wanted to overlap some of the primary-ish colors on top of each other so that I could see what colors can be made. \u00a0This is in part because I find myself a little frustrated with the color range of transparent glass. \u00a0So I used a lighter blue, a darker pink (although I didn&#8217;t know it was going to be so dark &#8212; the glass is light blue to begin with&#8230;it&#8217;s crazy what happens when you add heat!), a yellow (that I thought would be way more yellow than it turned out!) and a deeper green (just because I wanted to use it somewhere). \u00a0You can barely tell on the picture above, but one of the corners somehow was chipped off&#8230;I am debating &#8212; should I chip the other side and re-fuse the glass next time I go in so that the corners get a rounded corner? \u00a0I don&#8217;t know&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-214\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=214\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-214\" title=\"Overlapping Shapes Window Vase\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0975-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0975-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0975.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>For my second piece, I wanted to pair the pink with a piece of glass I got that was confetti-ed with pink and purple pieces of glass and an iridescent piece of glass. \u00a0When the light is not shining upon it, the color of the iridescent piece is a shimmery blue\/teal. \u00a0When the light shines through, the color is gold. \u00a0I love how this one turned out &#8212; transparent, but with some flair.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215\" title=\"Straight &amp; Diagonal Window Vase\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0971-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0971-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0971.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For my third piece, I thought I would use some pinks, oranges and yellows together (with a little of those same blue\/gold iridescent pieces). \u00a0I forget if I&#8217;ve mentioned before how difficult it is to put colors of glass together before you fuse them. \u00a0The reason is because what you see is not what you get. \u00a0Like I said a little earlier, the color of the pink glass before you fire it is a very light blue. \u00a0The yellow I selected was just that &#8212; a pale yellow. \u00a0And the deep orange I bought (for the blue\/orange vases) is also a very pale yellow.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-216\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=216\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-216\" title=\"Window Vases\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0957-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0957-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0957.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Anyway, I mention that because when I was putting together this piece, I really was not sure what color that diagonal piece was going to be. \u00a0As I worked with the yellow for earlier things, I threw the scraps in this box that I collect my scraps in. \u00a0In the box were also orange scraps. \u00a0And, if you follow from above, the orange scraps are the exact same color as the yellow scraps. \u00a0It was kind of unfortunate. \u00a0Fortunately, I think it turned out really nicely, and I suppose because I was going for oranges &amp; yellows as being part of the color scheme, it probably would have been a moot thing anyway.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-219\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=219\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-219\" title=\"Glass Earrings?\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_1174-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I still had room on my firing shelf once I finished these vases, but not enough time (or really enough space) to make another window vase. \u00a0So I decided to make a bunch of little bits, <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-220\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=220\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-220\" title=\"Glass Earrings?\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_1180-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>thinking that perhaps I could make them into earrings or a pendant or something. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t done anything with any of these just yet, but it is in my mind. \u00a0Next time, I might make more of those <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-221\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsgreene.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=221\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-221\" title=\"Glass Earrings?\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jsgreene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_1190-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>blue squares (perhaps with varying iridescent pieces on them) and then fuse those onto a larger piece. \u00a0Coasters, maybe?
